Abstract

The present paper is a review of Fondamenti di glottodidattica. Apprendere e insegnare le lingue oggi [Fundamentals of language teaching: Learning and teaching languages today], edited by Marina Chini and Cristina Bosisio and published by Carocci (Rome, Italy) in 2014. The volume is aimed at prospective and in-service teachers of foreign languages. The volume consists of six chapters that cover: the historical and epistemological development of language teaching as a discipline; fundamental concepts such as L1 acquisition and L2 acquisition and learning; components of linguistic education; theories of L2 teaching; evaluation and assessment of competencies; and finally, teacher education. The bibliography is comprehensive and up-to-date on the topics featured in each chapter.

Author Biography

Marilisa Birello , Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona

Marilisa Birello After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Marilisa Birello earned her Master’s degree in Spanish Foreign Language Education at the University of Barcelona. At the same university in 2006 she earned her doctoral degree in Education; her research focused on the analysis of students’ interactions within Italian as a Second Language courses. She has designed and taught courses for foreign language teacher education programs in different Italian and foreign institutes. She published numerous articles and book chapters about teaching and learning a foreign language along with pedagogical materials for Italian as a Second Language. After many years teaching Italian at the Escuela de Idiomas Modernos at the University of Barcelona, at present she teaches in the Department of Education at the Autonomous University of Barcelona).
