Abstract

This review examines We Are Not Amused: Failed Humor in Interaction by Nancy Bell, the first systematic examination of humorous miscommunication. Situating failed humor broadly as a (mis)communication phenomenon, the text provides an impressive range of conversational data to support each level of analysis.

John Banas, University of Oklahoma

John Banas has an MA in Communicology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests are in applied persuasion and interpersonal communication, both of which include humor research. He is an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Oklahoma.
