Abstract

This is a review of an edited book by Zein and Garton, titled Early Language Learning and Teacher Education, a collection of 14 chapters dedicated to the early learning of a foreign or second language. The authors of the contributions report different learning situations, analyzing their main characteristics and highlighting their strengths and critical points. These are mostly focus groups or limited research that describe very different educational environments, albeit concerning the teaching of languages to young learners. The review introduces the reference context and then describes the contents of the individual chapters, concluding with some considerations on the volume.

Author Biography

Alberta Novello, Università degli studi di Padova

Alberta Novello holds a Ph.D. in Language Sciences at the Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, she is a research fellow in the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the Università degli Studi di Padova, and a contract professor of teaching English and Italian as second languages at the Università degli Studi di Padova. Furthermore, she is the teaching coordinator of the Master’s degree in Teaching and promotion of Italian language and culture to foreigner) at the Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia. Moreover she is a consultant for the Italian state LS exams of the 1st grade secondary school at the Pedagogical Area of Bolzano. Her research areas include evaluation and testing, gifted and early bilingualism. She is the author of numerous essays and two monographs: Evaluating foreign languages at school. From theory to practice (Ca ’Foscari Editions, 2014) and Evaluating a foreign language: European certifications (Cafoscarina, 2009).
