In the following article, we carry out an analysis of the items from a multiple choice reading test for CILS (Italian as a Foreign Language Certification) (Centro CILS, 2009), run by the Università per Stranieri di Siena. We also examine the way in which the original text was modified for the test by the certifying body, leading to what we identify as a critical issue which, in our view, detracts from the text’s coherence. This study illustrates some of the difficulties in designing an exercise used widely in both testing and teaching context, that is, the multiple choice question.
