The reviewed volume considers the repercussions of pragmatic phenomena in the teaching of Spanish as a Second Language. Reflecting on the linguistic domain of the discipline of pragmatics, it proposes an open conception of said discipline that it terms expanded pragmatic theory. This new vision takes into account a wide range of different discursive units—from the minimum unit (the utterance) to the maximum unit (the text)—and examines them through the prism of Speech Act Theory. In a detailed analysis of phenomena observed in the Curriculum Plan for the Instituto Cervantes, the authors apply the concepts they have outlined to the process of teaching/learning Spanish as a Second Language, and propose a wide battery of rigorous activities that the reader can take to the classroom.
