Abstract

The book is dedicated to the development of pragmatic competence, in its diverse subcomponents, within the context of language acquisition and instruction of Italian as a second or foreign language. Based on a variety of empirical data, the book covers a range of topics: different types of speech acts, theories and general or specific pedagogical interventions (e.g., for vocabulary development), interactional skills and proficiency tests.

Author Biography

Ada Valentini, Università degli Studi di Bergamo

Ada Valentini is an associate professor of Language and Linguistics at the University of Bergamo. Since 1988, she has participated in the Pavia Project, dedicated to the study of the spontaneous acquisition of Italian as a second language. She is the author of L’italiano dei cinesi. Questioni di sintassi [The Italian of the Chinese. Matters of Syntax] (1992, Milan: Guerini Studio), and co-author of Verso l’italiano. Percorsi e strategie di acquisizione [Towards Italian. Paths and Strategies of Acquisition] (edited by Anna Giacalone Ramat, 2003, Rome: Carocci), Verso una nuova lingua [Towards a New Language] (edited by Cecilia Andorno and Ada Valentini, 2017, Turin: Utet University) and numerous other works on the acquisition of second languages and information structure.
