Abstract

The study we are conducting focuses on two morpho-lexical cloze tasks included in the Linguistic Certification Test of the Certificate in Italian for Speakers of Other Languages CELI of the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, B2 level, Summer session 2007 (CVCL, 2007a). Each cloze task is analyzed according to its various elements: the instructions, scoring, text, and individual items (namely the deletions the candidate is required to fill). The analysis of several critical issues allows us to begin to think through potential dangers of a cloze task, both in exam settings and in standard teaching practice.

Paolo Torresan has conducted research at SELEPROT, Estudos de semiótica, leitura e produção de texto (UERJ), at the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice, at Complutense University and Autónoma University in Madrid, and at Lancaster University in England. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Santa Monica College, California, USA and a Visiting Professor at Rio De Janeiro State University, Brazil. He is an author and trainer for the Italian publishing company ALMA Edizioni and editor of the journals Officina.it and Bollettino ITALS. He co/authored Intelligenze e didattica delle lingue (Bologna: EMI, 2008), Il noticing comparativo (with Francesco Della Valle. München: Lincom, 2013), and Studio su cloze mirati della certificazione CILS, livello avanzato (Rio de Janeiro: Dialogarts, 2015). He also edited, with Manuela Derosas, Didáctica de las lenguas culturas: Nuevas perspectivas (Buenos Aires: Sb International, 2011) and Favorecer el desarrollo de la expresión oral en la clase de idiomas (Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Lima, Lima 2016).
